Course aims
To give an overview of the main principles of graphic design and the application of these in design work; to introduce the history of graphic design and its basic concepts; to demonstrate an aesthetic and purposeful creative process through different practical tasks; to develop students’ knowledge of and skills in vector and bitmap graphics.
Brief description of the course
The development of graphic design, peculiarities of different epochs and styles. The main principles of colour theory. Combining colours, mixing and creating colour schemes. Psychology of colour. Types of composition, main principles. Main elements of graphic design, visual hierarchy. The main principles of design. Typography and the use of text in design. The history of typography, main rules. Different typefaces and fonts. Anatomy of letters, letter shapes. Text formatting. Creating design work with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Illustrations, icons, logos and posters in vector and bitmap graphics. Typography and text in design. Common methods in photo editing, photo manipulation and digital collage. Mixed media in vector and bitmap graphics.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows different design styles and eras;
- knows and applies the basic principles of design when creating design works;
- is able to plan and perform design work.
