Brief description of the course
The course will cover the following topics:
- The relevance of communication and creative disciplines in contemporary society, including aspects related to critical mediation of information, visual culture, digital humanities, and artistic research. The nature of academicism in these fields;
- Searching for academic information: information resources and sources, library databases and search options;
- Written and oral presentation skills: academic texts and their structure, academic writing style, referencing, plagiarism, critical evaluation of sources, types of academic text;
- Digital hygiene and ethics: special features of mediated interactions, possible risks (identity theft, cyber bullying), netiquette.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is informed about the central research and creative directions of the institute and their role in the society;
- knows how to employ strategies for critical thinking, writing and reading, knows how to analyze arguments and present one’s views both in written and oral form;
- is able to create academic texts and reference correctly, use appropriate information sources and present one’s results;
- known how to behave appropriately in virtual environment and how to avoid risks.
