Course aims
- Research analysis, and use of legal databases;
- Prewriting, drafting and revising strategies designed to produce effective written work;
- Applying the IRAC formula to compose a legal memorandum;
- Writing legal documents;
- Client interviewing techniques;
- Client letter writing;
- Court Pleadings;
- Developing skills in scholarly (scientific) legal research and analysis, and writing a scholarly (scientific) legal research paper/pleading on a legal topic or case;
- Appellate Brief;
- Advocacy exercises.
Brief description of the course
This course is designed to introduce entering law students to the world of legal discourse and to provide instruction, experience and guidance in learning to write legal documents and acquiring continuing development of skills in scholarly (scientific) legal research analysis and writing. The course also introduces students to techniques of appellate advocacy.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquire skills in legal research, analysis and writing;
- is able to write legal documents;
- has developed skills in interviewing and writing to clients, persuasive writing and oral advocacy;
- has developed scholarly (scientific) legal research and writing skills;
- understands the appellate process. Including rules for the format of briefs and for oral argument;
- has acquire the ability to perform legal research assignments.
