Course aims
To provide the students an understanding of the different layers of the Scandinavian influences in Estonia from the perspective of the written, visual and archaeological sources.
Brief description of the course
During the course different periods of the Estonian history will be discussed: the Viking area, the Danish and Swedish periods. Special attention is being devoted to political and social problems, cultural contacts, art and architecture. The course is being conducted by different lectures.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of the history of the Scandinavian countries and the history of Estonia during Denmark and Sweden;
- is able to evaluate the use of different types of sources in historical writing;
- is able to critically reflect the role of Denmark and Sweden in Estonian history and culture.
