Course aims
Provide students with a basic knowledge of rhythm music styles and means of expression - harmony, form, melody - to use when writing their own music, either virtually or in an ensemble. Be able to analyse, create, record and play back music. Completion of the course will provide the prerequisites for success in KUM6279.FK Songwriting and Composition
Brief description of the course
Relating the knowledge acquired in the previous semesters (courses KUM6254.FK Musical Listening Skills, KUM6255.FK Musical Literacy and KUM6257.FK Polyphony and Practical Harmony) to rhythm music theory and practical composition. Analysis of music based on listening and music text. A brief survey of rhythm music styles from the early 20th century (blues, early jazz) to the present. The star harmony system and the classical method of writing harmony. Common forms in rhythm music. Notation of pop-jazz songs as form and harmony, performance with an ensemble or virtually.
Playing the most common chord progressions (I-V-vi-IV, blues) in different sonorities on piano or own instrument.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to analyse and write down his or her own or others' music;
- can formulate a form and a harmonic notation;
- is familiar with the harmonic system;
- is oriented towards rhythm music styles;
- is able to perform their music in an ensemble or digitally.
