Course aims
To develop students’ professional musical hearing and memory as a foundation for interdisciplinary creative practice, focusing on distinguishing, naming and performing scales and chords by ear, by singing and on the piano, using a key-based approach.
Brief description of the course
The course develops musical memory and hearing through listening to, distinguishing and reproducing different scales and two-, three- and four-note harmonic structures. Practical work on the piano supports all activities, relating them to keys, real music and contemporary creative practice.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to aurally distinguish, name, sing and play on a keyboard various scales and chord structures, including major and minor scales, modes, chromaticism, whole-tone scale, intervals, triads and seventh chords, and use this knowledge consciously in sonic and multimedia projects.
