Course aims

Thorough overview of the development of the idea of independent state, of the existence of Estonian Republic from 1918 to 1940 and from 1991 up to present.

Brief description of the course

The attempts on independence of Estonians in 19-20 century. The birth of Estonian Republic, its recognition de facto and de jure. The constitution of 1920 and 1937. Political parties and parlamentarism in 1920.1934. Joining Russia (SU) and the period of Soviet Estonia (1940-1990). The process of regaining independence 1988-1991. The constitution of 1992. Parties and parlamentarism. Estonia as member of EU and NATO.
