Course aims
Students, who have passed the course can understand the world of ideas of Estonians, the birth of these ideas and its evolution. Students who have passed the course can discuss these issues thoroughly enough to teach them in secondary education schools.

Brief description of the course
National movements in Europe. The state-territorial nationalism and ethno-cultural nationalism. Cultural and political nationalism. J. J. Rousseau, J. G. Herder. Survey about the theoretical debates on nation and historical memory with the analysis of the specific case of Estonia. K. Deutsch, E. Gellner, A. D. Smith, M. Hroch. The Age of Englightement, romantic movement and national problems. „The poems of Ossian” by J. Macpherson. Demographic development of the Estonian people. The early ethnic awakening of Estonians under Swedish rule. Estonians avareness of history in the 18th–19th centuries. A linear treatment of history.Condition and background of social thinking development in Estonia. National awakening and movement of Estonians in the 19th century. Emergence and development of Estonian intellectual elite. Academic intelligentsia: K. J. Peterson, F. R. Faehlmann, F. R. Kreutzwald
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student will have the basic knowledge on theory of nationalism. He/she knows the basic notions like national movement, political and cultural nationalism. He/she is acquainted with the main ideas of nationalism expressed by Rousseau, Herder, Hegel. Acquires critical attitude towards thinkers like K. Deutsch, E. Gellner, A. D. Smith, M. Hroch. Students are capable for interpreting the development of national awakening and movement using theory and historiography of the history of the local entry.
