Course aims
To create the prerequisites for developing a holistic picture of school physical education as a subject and teaching it to students of different ages and with different abilities and motivations;
To support the development of analytical skills in pedagogical situations and the learning environment for planning and conducting the learning process;
To support the development of the student's subject and professional knowledge and skills and the willingness to practice what has been learned in the school environment;
To develop an understanding of the work and role of the (subject)teacher, including different school cultures;
Support the recognition of good practices in supporting the learning of all students;
To support the development of the teacher's identity.
Brief description of the course
Studies will be held in the auditorium and Tallinn University partner schools.
Documents regulating PE are reviewed, and factors of PE didactics related to the school environment will be analyzed.
The internship tasks focus on the following topics:
1. Designing a learning environment that supports the student's social, emotional, and cognitive development. Noticing the support of various factors of motivation.
2. Planning, implementing, and analyzing parts of the learning process based on the school curriculum. The methods used to achieve learning outcomes become fixed.
During the internship, the student performs various observations and small-scale practical tasks;
Based on lesson observations and completed tasks, the student analyzes the course of the observed lessons, the teacher's activities, and the impact on the students;
Based on practical tasks, the student analyzes his/her own (and, if possible, the activities of a fellow student) and the involvement of the students;
Feedback and analysis of theory and practice take place during the classroom meetings following the school visit.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of PE in schools, its organizational bases, and teaching to students of different ages. Analyses the curriculum of the specialty based on his/her skills and knowledge and points out his/her weaknesses or uncertainties in the implementation of the content of the curriculum;
- observes and analyses the teacher's activities as a designer of an emotionally supportive and inclusive learning environment and manages social and emotional processes (including group processes) in the learning and educational process, students' activities and cognitive processes in the classroom, linking the results of the analysis with knowledge about supporting the development of both subject and general competencies;
- observes and analyzes the learning environment at school, the teacher's various tasks and activities in planning and conducting lessons, linking the results of the analysis with theoretical knowledge acquired in PE didactics;
- knows different teaching methodological techniques and can notice and prevent dangerous situations;
- plans a lesson or part of a lesson in collaboration with the supervising teacher or fellow student carries it out independently or in collaboration, and analyzes what has been done. Compiles a professional information sheet for primary school students and parents.
- solves complex problems related to the subject area and argues the impact of the proposed solutions;
- solves complex cross-disciplinary problems using appropriate methods, taking into account the individuality of the learner(s) and supporting them in the learning process.
