Course aims

This course aims to introduce students to qualitative data collection and data analysis methods, particularly as applied in the field of sport, recreation and physical education.

Brief description of the course

Introduction to different epistemological and methodological positions in qualitative research. Data collection methods: interviews and observational techniques. Data analysis methods and related epistemological and methodological questions. Ethical issues in qualitative research. Structure and approach in reporting qualitative research.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to identify and understands main concepts in the qualitative research process;
- makes distinctions between the differences in quantitative and qualitative research methods;
- can identify the design, content and ethical issues involved in qualitative research;
- can identify main data collection and data analysis methods in qualitative research;
- can design qualitative research studies.
