Course aims
To create opportunities for understanding theoretical basis of the subject early childhood education, to support the formation of students’ skills in planning and analyzing educational activities in a preschool educational establishment.
Brief description of the course
The meaning of preschool pedagogy and education. Overview of the development of kindergartens in Estonia. Growing, education, educators. The essence of development, education and teaching in different stages of preschool age. Core activities in kindergarten based on the child’s daily schedule. Pedagogical approaches of early childhood education: Fröbel, Steiner, Montessori, Freinet, Reggio Emilia, DAP, Step by Step. Overview of various fields of education in preschool education. Learning and teaching methods in preschool age. National curriculum. Planning and evaluation of pedagogical process in preschool. Ethics and professionality of preschool teacher.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student:
- knows the key concepts and history of early childhood education and orientates in different pedagogical approaches and in professional development opportunities for kindergarten teachers;
- knows the basis and principles of planning, conducting and assessment of educational activities in a kindergarten;
- knows how to design a plan for educational activities;
- is able to design and present a presentation in a teamwork.
