Brief description of the course

How to define a “major” literary text? How do these major texts connect to such concepts as “canon” and “tradition”? And what is so unique about Russian literary history? This course offers a selective but broad overview of Russophone literatures based on close reading of texts from the 17th to the 21st century.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- analyzes texts from various periods of Russophone literatures;
- relates specific works of poetry and prose to relevant (e. g. historical) contexts;
- understands the mechanisms by which the literary canon is established and (re)shaped.
