Course aims
To understand the impact of rising powers on the international order and establish a view from the neglected Global South on international politics and International Relations as a discipline. To understand that the role of the West is diminishing in international politics and that its dominance has created many exploitative conditions for the rest of the world.
Brief description of the course
Western powers have dominated international politics and the discipline of International Relations for centuries. The West has established a world order based on its preferences and shaped the knowledge around the world based on its canon. However, the West’s position is diminishing as new powers rise (China, India, Turkey, Brazil) and revisionist powers like Russia challenge the order. Furthermore, the injustices perpetrated against the Global South - carried out and exacerbated by global economic and colonial structures - are becoming more and more visible, and a reassessing of the discipline becomes necessary.
In this course, we will learn also about the impact aspiring powers are having on the world order and in turn what those changes will mean for the Global South. We will feature firsthand knowledge from scholars from Asia and Africa and their analysis of international politics.
