Course aims
To facilitate the acquisition of basic knowledge of organic chemistry on the basis of the comprehensive school curriculum;
to facilitate the development of creative and critical thinking, problem solving, independence and collaborative skills.
Brief description of the course
History of organic chemistry. Organic chemistry vs. inorganic chemistry.
Organic matter. Structure and composition of organic matter.
Names and formulas of organic matter, types of formulas, IUPAC nomenclature and its uses. Isomery. Classes and properties of organic matter: Hydrocarbons (alkanes), halogen compounds, alcohols, ethers, amines, aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds, phenols, aromatic amines, carbonyl compounds: aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids, amino acids, esters and amides, fats, polymers, saccharides, proteins.
Organic chemistry in bio-systems.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has basic knowledge of organic chemistry;
- is familiar with the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry and the principal classes and properties of organic compounds;
- is able to present self-made speciality-related study materials using the e-portfolio.
