Course aims
To develop the knowledge and practical skills of instrumental analysis methods important in the context of molecular biochemistry. Main emphasis is on chromatographic and mass spectrometry methods.
Brief description of the course
Principles of the methods of analytical chemistry. High performance liquid chromatography (ion chromatography, reversed phase chromatography, normal phase chromatography, affinity chromatography). Classical Gel electrophoresis. Capillary zone electrophoresis and capillary gel electrophoresis. Application of capillary electrophoresis in bioanalytical chemistry. Capillary electrochromatography. Mass-spectrometry (ESI, MALDI). Sample preparation. Sensitivity and accuracy of chemical analysis. Statistical analysis of the data.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of instrumental analysis methods important for molecular biochemistry;
- has ability to carry out experiments with selected instrumental methods.
