Course aims

To provide an overview of corporate environmental management principles and tools. To enable students to acquire basic knowledge of both, environmental issues pertaining to business management, and essential tools of corporate environmental management.

Brief description of the course

The topics discussed at the course include: Business management; Sustainable development; Market expectations; Legal regulation; Command and control; Voluntary agreements and standards; Partnership with authorities, stakeholders and public; Environmental Management Systems; Environmental audits; Risk analysis; Mass and energy balances; Design for Environment. Life Cycle Analysis; Cleaner production; Eco-mapping; Eco-marketing; Environmental accounting; and Eco-labeling.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to explain the role of environmental management within corporate management system;
- can demonstrate knowledge about the range of environmental management principles and tools;
- can use basic environmental management tools like flowcharts, mass/energy balances, eco-mapping, (basic) Design for Environment methods;
- is able to contribute to implementation and maintenance of EMS;
- can carry out internal environmental management system audits.
