Course aims
An elective subject in the biology (marine biologists – environmental specialist) curriculum. Survey of the factors causing rarity and extinction of species, changes in species status over time, rare and endangered species in Estonia.
Brief description of the course
The course gives a survey of the reasons responsible for the rareness and extinction of species, changes in the status of species over time, red data books and the principles of their compilation, conservation of species within the frame of nature conservation laws, alien species, incl. invasive species, endangered and rare species in the world, in the Baltic Sea region and in Estonia. International conventions aimed at species protection.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands of the importance of biological diversity;
- can survey of the activities relating to species protection;
- has ability to differentiate natural and anthropogenic causes of species disappearance.
