Course aims
A subject for basic school teacher training.
To develop subject knowledge for teaching basic school biology: -
- a modern understanding of the main biochemical processes occurring in living organisms and the basics of molecular and cell biology;
- modern knowledge of the diversity of microorganisms and their importance in wildlife.
Brief description of the course
Chemical composition of living organisms, metabolism and energy, and bioregulation. Biological oxidation. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids. Major metabolic pathways (glycolysis, citrate cycle, and respiratory chain) and their relationships. Vitamins and hormones. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. DNA replication. Gene structure and regulation. Transcription and translation. Cell organelles, their properties and functions. Cell differentiation. Cells with different functions (muscle cells, nerve cells, etc.). Brief overview of molecular genetics and applications of genetic engineering. Cloning. Antibodies. Antigens. Immunological defense. Internal and external structure of microorganisms, their distribution and importance. Overview of different microbial groups. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Normal microflora of humans, animals and plants and pathogenicity of microorganisms. The role of microbes in the ecosystem.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains and analyzes the general principles of cellular metabolism;
- knows the structure and functions of the main biomolecules of cells, the main metabolic pathways and the relationships between them;
- can explain basic molecular biological mechanisms;
- explains the structure and function of cell structures;
- explains the role of biotechnology in medicine, food production, agriculture, etc.,
- has knowledge of the diversity of microbes, their importance and pathogenicity;
- explains and analyzes the general principles of cellular metabolism;
