Course aims
Gain knowledge and practical skills in wood turning and safe handling of wood lathes.
Brief description of the course
Wood lathes: various modifications and applications. Wood turning techniques and material selection. Getting to know the construction, handling and setting up of machine tools. Pre - treatment Woodturning lathes: different types, modifications, and areas of application. Basic and advanced woodturning techniques and principles of selecting suitable materials. Construction, setup, operation, and maintenance of woodturning lathes. Pre-processing techniques for semi-finished products, blanks, and components. Selection, design, and manufacture of workpieces in accordance with specified requirements. Occupational health and safety requirements in woodturning. Practical exercises in green wood turning (workshop).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains the operating principles of woodturning lathes;
- selects and uses wood purposefully in woodturning, taking material properties into account;
- applies various woodturning techniques according to the task;
- follows occupational safety requirements and uses appropriate personal protective equipment in woodturning.
