Course aims
Forming an understanding of the principles, objectives and tasks of comprehensive national defence and the the ability to associate these with the Estonian security and defence policies.
Brief description of the course
Managing Estonian national defence. Organisation and structure of national defence. Organisation of military defence. Source documents of national defence. Structure and tasks of Defence Forces and Defence League. Arms of service. Insignia and traditions of Defence Forces and Defence League.
Estonian security and defence policies. Objective and tasks of national defence. Primary independent defence potential of Estonia. Comprehensive national defence. The support from civil sector to military defence. International and domestic reach of defence policy. The condition of Estonia in the international security environment. Security risks influencing Estonian national defence. Cyber security.
Estonian participation in NATO and the EU. Collective defence and collective security. Collective defence of NATO. Joint security and defence policies of the EU.
Civil defence. Signing up as a draftee and determining the applicability for active service. The rights and obligations of draftees. Prolongation and exemption of compulsory military service. Summons for compulsory military service. Alternative service. Profession of a member of the defence forces. Service in reserve. Arranging differences and responsibility.
