Course aims
The aim of the seminar is to create the prerequisites for writing a Master's thesis and to support the Master's thesis writing process. The seminar will help to formulate a research problem, to find suitable methods to solve the research problem, to support the process of data collection and analysis, and presentation of research results and the formalization of a Master's thesis. In the research seminar binding of different theoretical viewpoints with empirical research will be discussed. The seminar will help to develop the skills to participate in professional discussions and academic debates and for reviewing the research. The seminar will create an opportunity to discuss central topics and issues of information science related to the Master thesis and present these in the seminar presentations and discussions.
Brief description of the course
Students are divided into groups according to selected areas of research. Each group has its own supervisor/tutor. Extensive discussions on specific problems in the field of research will be arranged about research problems, -design, strategies, methods and techniques. The research process follows the research life cycle of a specific field: the problem setting, research questions/hypothesis, a theoretical framework/literature review, data collection and analytical methods and techniques, presentation of results and discussion, research formalization (scientific language and style, referencing).
