Course aims

To give an overview about the history of the development of operating systems, their structure and principles of work.

Brief description of the course

An overview about the history of the development of operating systems. The issue of operating systems and principles of work. Kinds of operating systems: single vs multitask. Multi-user operating systems. Memory Manager, Processor Manager, Device Manager, File Manager, Network Manager. Memory management and process management and planning algorithms. Multiprocessor systems. Virtual memory. Hidden memory. File systems. The algorithms of using the recording devices. Fault tolerance, the possibilities of its accomplishment.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has general knowledge about the essence and principles of work of operating systems.
