Course aims
The aim of this course is to give the knowledge about the characteristics and structure of Japanese academic essay and free essay.
Brief description of the course
During the course will be introduced some common characteristics of Japanese essays, different stylistics and grammatical expressions: yōyakubun (summary and abstract), shōrombun (short essay) and free essay. In contact lessons students read and analyze examples of essays by different authors, paying attention to the structure and composition of Japanese essays. Students have to submit a yōyakubun and a shōrombun on designated theme and a free essay on freely chosen theme. Students will learn the tategaki (vertical writing) rules of genkō-yōshi (manuscript paper) and the usage of ko-so-a-do-words in a lengthy text. Special attention will be paid to the conjunctive words used in essays and to the composition of compound sentences. Also there will be introduced the different techniques of abbreviation, like nominalization (meishika) and shortening of sentence (shōryaku).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the specific features of the language and structure of an academic text;
- knows the stylistic variations of different academic texts;
- knows and is able to use different abbreviation and nominalisation techniques in Japanese texts;
- is able to write in Japanese academic texts (abstract, summary, short essay), and knows the basic conventions of reference code in Japanese.
