Course aims
The aim of the course is to introduce the first-year BA students to the theory and practice of doing academic research, to give them an overview of research ethics and strategies, as well as to create a base for conducting indipendent research work.
An important objective of the course is to familiarise students with the traditions and practices of academic writing, and to give them the essential knowledge and tools for planning, stucturing and developing their own academic research, starting from elaborating a research question and finishing with the production of an academic essay.
The course focuses greatly on developing the skills of critical reading and critical writing, as well as articulating clear and academically grounded position.
It supports the development of the skills of making public speeches and presenting one’s research work.
The course also gives a good overview of ethnographic writing in anthropology and its recent developments.
Brief description of the course
The course focuses on the process of academic writing, the questions of style and ethics, as well as the creation of academic articles. The course looks into the traditions of academic writing, referencing and the usage of other authors’ texts. The course divided into classwork and independent work. During the class work the students have to attend the lecture delivered by the lecturer and to participate actively in the class discussions.
During the independent work the students have to prepare an independent research project, work with the compulsory literature, present three short homeworks and, finally, to write an academic essay.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to plan, prepare and conduct an academic research work using secondary research data;
- is familiar with the academic sources and databases which are useful for their future research;
- knows how to correctly reference the works of other authors to avoid plagiarism, and they is familiar with the ethics of academic research;
- can use academic sources to read critically ethnographic materials, develop research questions and plan the structure of the work, as well as produce logical and analytical arguments.
