Course aims
• Offering an opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge and skills for writing an anthropological research paper.
• Developing student’s skills in defining a research question, designing a theses structure, and developing the knowledge and skills how to organise literature and ethnographic material into a coherent written text.
Brief description of the course
The seminar builds on the previous courses in the curriculum that have been offered for developing the students' research expertise and academic writing skills (i.e. the courses on methodology and theory, the course on academic writing) and the cooperative efforts of the student and his/her supervisor. By the beginning of the Research Seminar, in close collaboration with the supervisor, the student has decided on his/her final specific topic and research plan. The seminar supports students’ writing process, analysing the research questions, structure, theoretical approaches and writing styles of their research papers. This means that students are regularly asked to present their chapter drafts to their peers to receive constructive criticism and feedback. Even though the seminar should not be taken as a replacement of regular meetings with one’s supervisor, the outcome of the seminar should be finalised theses that student is ready to submit at the end of semester.
The research paper does not have to be based on an ethnographic fieldwork, as this is rather encouraged on MA level. However, if a student desires to conduct a fieldwork and finds an agreement with his/ her supervisor, then doing fieldwork is also accepted.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has achieved the knowledge and skills how to do and write an anthropological research;
- is skillful in analyzing the research topics of fellow students.
