Course aims
- to gain an understanding of some basic concepts, debates, theoretical and methodological approaches, as well as research ethics in the fields of anthropology and sociology of gender;
- to explore specific topics related to gender and intersectionality from anthropological and sociological perspectives.
Brief description of the course
The course will give students an overview of and provide opportunities for discussion on a selection of topics related to gender in the fields of anthropology and sociology. An intersectional approach to gender is taken throughout the course, considering ways in which gender intersects with other socially constructed categories, such as race, age, ethnicity, sexuality etc in various realms of social life. The course consists of seminars focusing on a specific topic. Students are required to read compulsory reading material for the seminars or familiarise themselves with other material assigned for each seminar. In addition, each student will write three reflection papers on the compulsory materials of three seminars of their choice. Each student will have a short presentation on the materials of one seminar. Students will write course papers on a topic of their choice, related to the themes covered in the course. All students are expected to actively and meaningfully contribute to seminar discussions.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has familiarised themselves with the key concepts, theoretical approaches, epistemologies and methodologies concerning gender in the disciplines of anthropology and sociology;
- has developed knowledge and skills to critically analyse gender, gendered processes and structures in society;
- is able to formulate research questions regarding gender in social life, plan and carry out research in this area.
