Course aims

An introductory overview of traditional and contemporary fields of the study of linguistics, points of contact with other disciplines and possibilities for the application of the results of linguistic research.

Brief description of the course

Language and linguistics, its applications. Phonetics: sound system, prosody. Phonology: phoneme, allophone, phonological typology. Syntax, syntactic typology. Language as a sign system, symbol, index, icon, diagram. Iconic communication. Sign language. Sentence semantics. Pragmatics. Sociolinguistics. Language change and grammaticalization. Language change and typology. Model of a tree diagram and language families of the world. Model of a tree diagram and contact theory. Linguistic mind. Hypothesis of linguistic relativity. Psycholinguistics: dyslexia, aphasia.

Upon completing the course the student:
