Brief description of the course

The course introduces the principles, values and ethical standards of language editing. Topics include the role of the language editor, editorial resources, the norms of Standard Estonian, text assessment, stages of editing, linguistic and stylistic editing, fact-checking, source use, proofreading, translation editing and collaboration with authors, translators and other stakeholders. Students complete practical editing assignments involving different text types.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the norms and current developments of Standard Estonian and the contemporary principles of language editing;
- understands the responsibilities of a language editor and uses relevant editorial resources effectively;
- edits different types of texts, including translations, taking into account audience and communicative context, evaluates linguistic quality, justifies editorial interventions and makes informed editorial decisions;
- uses digital tools and software critically and effectively in editorial work;
- edits texts independently and collaboratively and understands the principles of proofreading;
- follows the ethical principles of editorial practice and values clear, accurate and context-appropriate language use;
- reflects on the development of their editing skills and evaluates the quality of their work.
