Course aims

• Provide an overview of the norms of written Estonian.
• Introduce the tasks and support materials of a language editor.
• Introduce the ethical aspects of language editing.
• Develop the ability to edit different types of texts.
• Provide an overview of the principles of text correction.

Brief description of the course

Estonian written language norms. Language editor's tasks and support materials. Editing principles. Cooperation with the author and layout designer. Text correction. Practical text editing.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and understands the norms of written Estonian;
- knows the tasks of a language editor;
- knows and is able to use language editing aids;
- is able to edit different types of texts linguistically;
- analyzes and justifies corrections made during editing;
- finds the information necessary for fact-checking and uses the software necessary for editing;
- is familiar with the principles of proofreading;
- takes into account the ethical aspects of editing.
