Course aims
Develop the skills to: 1) analyze the need for and principles of editing a text according to the type of text; 2) edit texts of various genres (e.g., media, legal, administrative, scientific, or advertising texts) and 3) independently edit longer complete texts, using various types of language resources and other supplementary materials.
Brief description of the course
Classification of texts by type and genre. Specific features and requirements for editing different types of texts. Editing the structure of texts. Terminology work in different kinds of texts. Practical editing of various genres: media texts, advertising texts, legal and administrative texts, scientific texts. Independent editing for each text genre.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to analyze the need for text editing according to the text type;
- plan editorial work in terms of time and scope;
- has skills for editing different types of texts conceptually (structure, density of the text, etc.) and linguistically;
- can collaborate with the author or the translator of the text;
- use different databases and data sources relevant for different types of texts;
- analyse corrections they have made.
