Course aims
To give an overview of historical development of Finnish standard language, geographical and social dialects and sublanguages, users and culture in comparison with closely related languages, to introduce current trends in development of Finnish geographical and social dialects and Finnish as the official language of The European Union.
Brief description of the course
Give an overview of the history of Finnish language and the first written texts; introduce Finnish dialects and their linguistic and cultural specifity; analyse the results of language reform; introduce modern spoken language; give an overview of modern geographical and social dialects with main focus on Helsinki slang
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a knowledge of the periods of the history of Finnish language and the history;
- is familiar with problems and codification of literary Finnish, has knowledge of sublanguages and trends of their development, has ability to compare the structures and paradigmatic of sublanguages;
- has ability to notice changes in usage of modern Finnish;
- is tolerant with the plurality and variety of regional, social and individual sublanguages.
