Course aims
To provide the basis for acquiring competence in written and oral Finnish on level C1 as in Common European Framework of Reference for Language.
Brief description of the course
Grammar: the use of articles, prepositions and pronouns and their analysis.
Oral skills: discussing the contemporary problems in Finnish. The students will independently choose topics and make a presentation; a discussion follows.
Writing skills: the students will write short essays on topics discussed in conversation classes; mistakes will be analysed and corrected in class.
Reading, listening and comprehension: the reading and interpretation of complicated original texts in Finnish: listening of Finnish sound and video recordings.
Individual work: listening, use of dictionaries, reading skills, written expression and feedback.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- uses correctly articles, prepositions and pronouns in oral and written expression;
- speaks and communicates fluently and spontaneously in Finnish without looking for words too much;
- is able to write different kinds of texts in grammatically correct Finnish using broad vocabulary and appropriate register;
- is able to understand complex and copious texts and to analyse them from syntactic and semantic aspects;
- can follow and retell oral texts in Finnish (for example: dialogues, radio broadcasts, TV news etc.).
