Course aims

To give students systematic and up-to-date knowledge about Estonian literature of the period 1920–1960. To develop the ability to work independently with literary and literary historical texts of different periods. To provide students with practical experience to analyze literary texts. To prepare students for more specific lecture courses in literary history as well as for more specific seminars.

Brief description of the course

The main problems of Estonian literature in 1920–1960: periodization, Eastern, Western and inner exile, intellectuality, closeness to life, closeness to power, realism and modernism. Estonian literature in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s: literary life, poetry, prose, drama.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired a general knowledge of the main trends and concepts in Estonian literature in 1920-1960;
- has acquired a skill to analyze literary and literary historical texts from different periods;
- is are able to formulate the ideas and thoughts provoked by literary texts.
