Course aims
The objective of the course is to give knowledge about the earliest period of Estonian literature, the formation and the first manifestations of it. The focus is on the literature written by Baltic Germans as well as the first Estonian national literary texts. The National Awakening period in the 19th century and the Young Estonia movement in the beginning of the 20th century are also the cornerstones of the course. The course ends with the discussion about literary group „Siuru“.
Brief description of the course
The course starts with the first written manifestations of Estonian literature. Reviews of chronicle and church literature are given. Reformation. Swedish period in Estonian literary history. Baroque: Reiner Brockmann. Bible translation. Enlightenment and the activity of estophiles, didactic stories (Arvelius, Willmann, Luce ja Holtz). The first Estonian national writers: K. J. Peterson. O. W. Masing, F. R. Faehlmann, F. R. Kreutzwald. The socio-political background of the Estonian National Awakening. Jakob Hurt and Carl Robert Jakobson. Villem Reimann and Estonian Student Society (EÜS). The literary life at the end of the 19th century: Eduard Vilde; the devaluation of poetry. The pre-story of Young Estonia movement and the activities of Young Estonia in 1905–1915. The 3rd album of Young Estonia. „Ruth“ by J. Randvere . Jaan Oks. Impressionism and the literary group “Siuru”.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to orientate in the older history of Estonian literature and culture. The student is familiar with the most important texts of older Estonian literature, has read them and is able to relate them to literary canon and context.
