Course aims

To generate skills of precise and clear presentation of argumentation in academic text; to develop skills of specialized dictionaries and terminology lists usage. To present an overview of main concepts and tendencies in within a specialized field.

Brief description of the course

Estonian academic language as a means of cognition and thinking, academic text as a text type. Features of academic texts. Structrure of academic text. Tables and graphs, abbreviations. Definition of concepts and use of terminology. Research methods, presentation and analysis of material and results. In case if there is at least five Russian- or English-speaking students, Russian- and English-medium seminars are provided in addition to Estonian-medium lectures.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to produce academic texts in his/her discipline and can critically handle terminology sources;
- knows main principles of academic language functioning and is able to systematically used clear terms in academic texts within his/her discipline;
- can describe main development tendencies of terminology and analyze general principles of terminology use;
- is able to find answers in appropriate terminology source and can provide argumentation of his/her views.
