Course aims
To provide basic knowledge of classifying and interpretation of phonologic and morphologic facts, and proficiency in applying it to practical phonetic, phonological and morphological analysis.
Brief description of the course
Orthographies and transcriptions. Phonetic and phonological transcription. Letters and diacritics. The phonological interpretation of segmental and prosodic components of the sound system. Syllable types. Stress foot. Theory of segmental quantity degree. The essence of quantity degree: criticism of the theory.
An introductory linguistic-typological overview of the grammatical means used in languages and the development mechanisms of various morphological types. An analysis of Estonian morpho(phono)logical methods: systems of suppletion and morphological categories. Classification of Estonian parts of speech and morphological inflectional types. Against this background the classification of Estonian parts of speech is presented: inflectional parts of speech - verbs and declinable words, invariable parts of speech.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is acquainted with main concepts and terms of phonetics and phonology;
- has an overview of phonetic and phonological system of Estonian language;
- has a systematic overview of Estonian morpho-phonological and morphological methods and ha/she can use it in practical analysis;
- is able to identify the declension and conjugation types of words and generate all permitted parallel forms.
