Brief description of the course
The course introduces different approaches to describing syntactic structure. Topics include the sentence and its constituents, grammatical relations, major sentence types, the structure of the elementary sentence, communicative and referential modality, and communicative sentence types.
Further topics include syntactic processes such as ellipsis, coordination and substitution; information structure and word order; non-finite constructions and subordinate clauses; sentence analysis and sentence correctness. The course also addresses the role of sentences within texts, mechanisms of textual cohesion, and the linguistic analysis of texts from the perspectives of orthography, morphology, word formation, lexicology and syntax.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the structure of Estonian sentences, the structure and functions of sentence constituents, and applies this knowledge in syntactic analysis;
- understands and applies the principles of Estonian word order in different sentence types and the main principles of textual cohesion;
- analyses orthographic, morphological, word-formational, lexical and syntactic features of texts.
