Course aims
The aim of the course is to develop a complete picture of the construction of the Estonian sentence, to acquire recommendations and spelling norms based on syntax and the ability to linguistically analyze the text.
Brief description of the course
Ways of describing syntactic structure. Historical and present day description of Estonian syntax. Sentence and their constituent parts, grammatical relationships, main types of sentences. Basic structure of a context-free elementary clause: parts of a sentence, non-part elements of sentences, deep structure of different types of phrases. Communicative and nominative modality and their formation in the sentence, communicative sentence types. Syntactic processes: ellipsis, coordination, substitution. Information structure of the sentence and word order. Secondary constructions and subordinate clauses, their classification and status in sentences. Exercises on sentence analysis, correct usage etc. Sentence in text, pairing sentences into text. Linguistic analysis of text: spelling, morphology, word formation, lexicology and syntax.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired a general knowledge of the sentence construction of the Estonian language, the structure and functions of the sentence formers;
- is able to analyze the sentence practically;
- knows and recognizes the basic rules of linking the text of the Estonian language;
- is able to analyze the spelling, morphology, word formation, lexicology and syntax of the text.
