Course aims

The course provides the basic knowledge of systematization and interpretation of facts concerning word formation and lexicology, and the adeptness to apply this knowledge in practical analysis.

Brief description of the course

Basic concepts of word formation, methods of word formation. Estonian word formation system: meaning groups of derivatives and compound words. word formation diagrams and word families, vocabulary analysis (compound words, derivatives). Word and dictionary, vocabulary enrichment. The ownness and foreignness of the vocabulary. Lexical relationships. Language functions and choice of words, the style value of the word. Lexicography. Purpose of study of the origin of vocabulary, etymologization methods. Overview of the origin of the Estonian word stems, the contacts of the Estonian language with other languages and the history of the study of the Estonian vocabulary.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired an overview of the Estonian word formation system as well as the origin and distribution of the vocabulary, the place of the word in the language system;
- knows the origin layers of the Estonian vocabulary and is able to put the knowledge gained into practice.
