Brief description of the course
The course introduces the key concepts and processes of word formation. Topics include the Estonian word-formation system, semantic groups of derived and compound words, word-formation patterns and word families, and the analysis of compounds and derivatives.
The lexicology component covers vocabulary development and enrichment, native and borrowed vocabulary, lexical and semantic relations, language functions and lexical choice, stylistic value, lexicography, and the study of word origins. Students gain an overview of the origins of the Estonian lexical stock, language contacts, and the history of lexical research in Estonian

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains the key concepts of Estonian word formation and lexicology;
- classifies words according to word-formation processes and analyses the relationship between word form and meaning;
- analyses the origin, stratification, enrichment and development of the Estonian lexicon in the context of language contact and societal change, identifies lexical relations, and distinguishes stylistic value, domain-specific usage and register appropriateness;
- uses dictionaries and digital language resources purposefully in the analysis of word structure, meaning, origin, usage and stylistic value;
- presents observations related to word formation and lexicology clearly, systematically and in accordance with the conventions of academic communication, taking into account the communicative situation and target audience.
