Course aims
The objective of the course is to give knowledge about the earliest period of Estonian literature - about folklore, about the first manifestations of Estonian literature, till the literary texts written at the end of the 19th century.
Brief description of the course
The course provides comprehensive knowledge about the formation of Estonian literature starting from folklore. The knowledge about the genesis and sources of folkore, about foklore genres and their components, about collecting folklore and Estonian folklore collections is provided. Students will acquire knowledge about earlier periods of Estonian literature, the first written manifestations, about Estonian literature of the 17th, 18th and 19th century, National Awakening period and Post-Awakening period at the end of the 19th century. The works by K. J. Peterson, O. W. Masing, F. R. Faehlmann, F. R. Kreutzwald, Lydia Koidula, Jakob Hurt, Carl Robert Jakobson are tackled in more detail. The core texts of the period are analyzed and their relations to literary historical and social context are taken into consideration.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the content of the terms “folklore”, “folklore science” (folklore / folkloristics), “Baltic (German) literary culture” and others;
- is familiar with the most important texts of older Estonian literature, has read them and is able to relate these core texts to literary canon and sociohistorical context.
- is aware of the historical conditions of the formation Estonian written word and the interrelationships between Estonian and (Baltic) German literature;
- is able to name and characterize the discourses of older Estonian literary culture, the channels of distribution written word, the subtypes of (fiction) literature and the most important examples;
- knows the story of compiling and accepting key texts of older Estonian literature (bible, national epic);
- is familiar with the folklore and older Estonian literature text examples, can use them by type / genre defined and placed in the older literature, examples of the time axis, including the cultural history into an epoch;
- knows the oldest monuments of older Estonian literary culture (the first examples of a genre);
- is able to use web-based databases and collections;
- values the role of folklore and literature as a reflector and designer of society;
- presents his analytical observations in a reasoned and linguistically correct, both orally and in writing;
- understands the importance of reading in broadening one's horizons, self-determination, emotional enrichment and moral improvement.
