Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of variation in the Estonian language across time and space. It consists of three interconnected parts. The first introduces the theoretical framework necessary for understanding language variation. The second focuses on the system of Estonian language varieties, and the third examines the historical development of the Estonian language and Standard Estonian.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the modes of language variation and is able to name them with the right terms;
- knows the most important Estonian sublanguages (written language, oral language, dialects, online language, etc.) and their most important features, is able to name them and find them in texts;
- knows the most important changes in the history of the Estonian language and written language and is able to find in the text the features characteristic of its writing period.
