Course aims
To create the basis for an overview of the history of standard Estonian, language planning and the principles of Estonian orthography. To develop students' ability to use the correct standard Estonian.
Brief description of the course
The formation of a literary language in the 16th century, grammars, dictionaries and Bible translations in 17th-18th century, development of two standard languages. Development of standard Estonian. Research in Estonian on the 19th century, the formation of the national standard language. Language planning on the 20th century. Main concepts of onomastics classification of names. International planning of names and Estonia. Name planning in Estonia.
Written language, alphabet, spelling. The principles of Estonian orthography. Phonemic representation, ortography of loenawords, derivates. Splitting words and abbreviations. Using capital letters. Writing of compounds. Writing numbers and dates. Punctuation.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has the basic knowledge of developmental stages of standard Estonian, important persons and institutions in the development of Estonian;
- knows the principles of language planning, main sources of planning names and can use these principles in practice;
- knows the principles of Estonian orthography, can apply rules and regulations, can find spelling errors and knows how to avoid them and improve the text.
