Course aims
To create a systematic overview of Estonian syntax. Identifying traditional parts of speech, phrases, clauses and sentence types.
Brief description of the course
The course covers the following topics: ways of describing syntactic structure. Traditional parts of speech; phrases, their types, structure and syntactic functions; clause, relationships within the clause; grammatical relations; semantic functions; sentence and its constituent parts, grammatical relationships, main types of sentences. Basic structure of a context-free elementary clause. Communicative and nominative modality in the sentence, communicative sentence types. Syntactic processes: ellipsis, coordination, subordination. Information structure of the sentenc;, word order. Secondary constructions and subordinate clauses, their classification and status in sentences.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student is able to use and understand the technical terminology; to determine phrase and clause structure and various sentence types; to undertake syntactic analysis at phrase and sentence level;
