Course aims
To provide PhD students an overview of latest trends in cultural data analytics, digital humanities, computational social science, network science and related fields.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of regular invited Lectures and Lab Encounters. Both formats include time for questions and discussion. To earn credit, the student must participate in 80% of the events of the semester and produce a research product where they apply or discuss a theory, method or approach from one of the talks. Ideally, this would form a part of their thesis or a research paper. This can take the form of an essay, (part of a) thesis chapter, data analysis visualization project. The exact format and nature of each research product is to be negotiated individually with the course organizer.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has gained an overview of the latest directions and results in cultural data analytics and adjacent fields of research;
- has gained experience in participation in academic discussion;
- has carried out individual research, with the outlook of incorporating it into a future thesis or publication.
