Course aims
A main subject for the Film Editing speciality, during which the student acquires the substantive and technical skills for film editing. The first part of the course gives an overview of editing a documentary film. During the course, a variety of documentary genres are analysed, and the acquired theory is applied in practice. By the end of the course, each student edits a complete short documentary. The second part of the course focuses on the differences between TV and advertising editing and film editing. The course includes practical editing of several TV programmes and advertisements and subsequent analysis of the work.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of speciality seminars on various elements of an editor's work, performing practical exercises, viewing film exceprts as well as joint analysis of exercises and film excerpts in the classroom.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has systematic knowledges about the genres of documentary, the editing process and the methods tricks of work;
- has ability to critically analyse the dramatic structure and editing of documentaries;
- has acquisition of various methods of theoretical analysis;
- has ability edit a complete short documentary;
- has ability to work effectively in a limited amount of time;
- has ability to independently choose the appropriate editing systems and working practices for one’s work, and flexibility working in different environments
