Course aims
Overview of development of western civilization from the beginning of it up to the fall of Western-Rome on 5th century. The following areas will be covered: political history, society and statehood, religion and culture.
Brief description of the course
History of ancient countries of the East: overview of sources, ancient empires of the East, their grand culture and its place in world history. Ancient Greece: historical sources and cultural heritage. Historiography of Hellenism. Crete and Mycenae. Achaea and Greece. Period of Homer. Archaic Greece. Classical Greece. Conquests of Alexander the Great. Hellenistic culture. Ancient Rome. Sources and historiography. Early republican period. Civil wars. Early imperial period. Roman Empire. Christian Church. Demise of Western Rome. Eastern Roman Empire.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- tunneb vanaaja ajaloo tähtsamat faktoloogiat;
- oskab iseloomustada Muistse Lähis-Ida, Vana-Kreeka ja Vana-Rooma ühiskonda riiklust ja kultuuri, tuues esile nii ühiseid kui ka erijooni;
- oskab nimetada nimetada tähtsamaid allikaid teemade ja uurimisküsimuste lõikes.
