Course aims
To give knowledge about mythology and folklore as the phenomena of culture in their genetic relation; to show specificity of the folklore text; to show genetical and typological relations between the mythology, folklore and the literature.
Brief description of the course
Mythology and folklore as phenomena of culture. Folklore and ethnography. Specificity of the folklore text. Genres of folklore. Poetics and genesis of a magic fairy tale. Poetics and genesis of the epos. A “world tree” (arbor mundi) and its transformations in folklore and the literature. A myth and ritual. Slavic mythology and history of Slavs. Mythology and christianity. Calendar and family rituals. A folk theatre. Children's folklore. Modern city folklore. Folklore and mythology in literature of XIX-XXth centuries.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowing mythological and folkloric texts, understanding mythological (folkloric) world outlook and its specific details as well as the role of myth and floklore in cultural and literary process developement.
