Course aims
To give an overview of the use of the term civil society in sociological, political and common social theory.
Brief description of the course
The connections between the term civil society and other similar concepts like social movements, democracy, political culture, lifeworld (German: Lebenswelt) and bourgeois public sphere are explained. Civil society as a theoretical and empirical term is under observation: classical and contemporary theoretics and current research fields related to the subject matter. For example the role of civil society in the democratization process of developing countries, the problems of post-socialist civil society and the relationship between civil society and contemporary welfare state.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has overview of the development, meaning and use of the term civil society in different fields.
