Course aims
To introduce the most influential contemporary (last 50 years) social theories and their basic concepts. To shape critical attitudes in students towards theoretical discourses and their possible application.
Brief description of the course
The course covers a selection of the following theories:
Neo-Functualism. Rational Choice Theory. Constructionism. Ethnomethodology
Interactionism – dramaturgical theory. Neo-Pragmatism. Post-Structuralism. Post-Modernism. Contemporary Critical Theory. Feminist Theory. Structuration Theory. Cultural research
The course consists of mainly lectures, in the end of the course additionally independent reading and seminars. Students have to prepare a short presentation for presenting in seminar and pass a written examination.
