Course aims
To provide an overview of the concepts as well as the development and importance of meteorology and climatology. To develop the skill to relate climatic conditions to geographical systems, geographical zones and landscapes.
Brief description of the course
Concepts of climatology and meteorology, their relationship with other sciences. The influence of climate factors on the genesis of weather and climate. Formation and distribution of climate elements on Earth. The nature of the climate system, its states, components, and influences. Greenhouse gases, currents, climate phenomena (Southern Oscillation, Walker circulation, monsoons, NAO and AO). Methods of climate monitoring and research, factors causing climate change, and future climate.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the conceptual system of meteorology and climatology;
- knows the main weather elements and understands the physical processes of their formation;
- can relate climate factors to the formation of weather and climate and analyse their impact on the distribution of climate elements on Earth;
- understands the nature of the climate system, its components and states, and is able to explain their interactions;
- is able to recognize and describe the main factors influencing the climate system, including the role of greenhouse gases, the influence of ocean currents and the most important climate phenomena (Southern Oscillation, Walker Circulation, monsoons, NAO, AO);
- can analyze a weather map.
