Course aims
To support the development of a deepened understanding of optical or light phenomena and their principles;
To enable the development of a deepened physical world-view;
To support the development of knowledge concerning the applicability of optics.
Brief description of the course
Geometrical optics and photometry. Optical tools. Wave optics: interference, diffraction, polarisation. The interaction between light and matter, dispersion. Spectrums and spectral analysis. The dispersion of light. Laws of radiation, and the birth of quantum physics. The concepts of quantum optics: photoelectric effect, Compton effect. Solving the exercises on all topics.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the laws of geometrical optics and wave optics, and the limits to applicability;
- can apply the principles of optics while explaining and analysing the phenomena occurring in nature;
- understands the operating principles and the limits to applicability of optical tools while researching the phenomena occurring in nature;
- can solve the exercises in optics (graphically, geometrically, analytically), and compare the obtained results with conclusions deducted from theory;
- can use different sources of information (reference books, handbooks, the Internet, etc.) in order to solve the occurring problems in different domains of optics.
