Brief description of the course
General zoology: different fields of zoology, taxonomy, classification. The progress of animal evolution. Some protist groups, traditionally dealt as animals. All animal phyla will be introduced. Sponges, coelenterates, flatworms, roundworms, annelids, molluscs, arthropods, echinodermates and chordates will be studied in greater depth. The major classes of arthropods and chordates will also be studied in depth: arachnids, crustaceans, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the boundaries of animal diversity and orientates in animal taxonomy;
- knows the basic characteristics of animal phyla;
- can describe and recognise body plans of widely distributed animal groups.
